The purpose of life is a life of purpose.
~Robert Byrne, author
It is easy to get sidetracked in life.
We are put through the experiences of traveling life by our parents, our schools and our workplaces. Willing and eager, we set out on the journey with our innermost being in tow. Doing everything that is in the prescription for happiness, we create our individualized script, pick our cast and create the play.
Somewhere along the way, we get so caught up in the drama of day to day life, we forget why we are doing what we are doing. Competition, aggressive people, various difficulties enter the scene and mess everything up. Not to mention the complexity of life that comes from living on several playing fields all raging at the same time. Life seems to pound us into the ground sometimes, with people reminding us that we are not so great.
Some of my colleagues are convinced that he who dies with the most toys, wins. Funny. It seems that when you are dead those toys are irrelevant and the bank account with 9 zeros is meaningless.
The game turns into a rat race and the people playing the game play hard.
So it is very easy to forget who we are.
We are still free people with magnificent, powerful, incredible minds that can create all kinds of reality.
It is almost as if the light was deliberately withdrawn from us. By us.
That light is always within us. We don’t have to call the light to us because we all have that spark of light. We were born with it. You see it in children playing. And in our happiest moments. Connecting back to that light is something we can do right now. Every day.
Our birthright is to receive that light. So, if you can imagine that the purpose of life is to experience happiness, our job is literally to make the best of everything we do. Because literally everything we do is a chance to achieve our purpose of happiness. And to bring happiness to the people around us.
What a different perspective.
The purpose of life is to receive light, not for the self alone, but for the sake of sharing with others. Giving to others can bring great joy and adds both purpose and meaning. Happiness comes from the love of great friends and family and from making a meaningful contribution to the people around us.
